The Inspectorate's check - up in the Sofia City Court's criminal devision escaladed to a conflict between the magistrates and the inspectors. The majority of judges raised their objectections to the perfunctory and statistical criteria used for assessment of their work and required a full new inspection.
The Bulgarian Helsinki Committee (BHC) defined the inspection of the city court as extraordinary, unjust and is a political attack against the judges - reformers. On the other hand, Ana Karaivanova replied that she is a subject to pressure and judges are trying to dictate to the independant inspectors who, when and how to inspect.
So far, the result is that the Supreme Judicial Council did not even put on the table for discussion the request for a new inspection of the city court and initiated disciplinary proceedings against four judges who were offered for sanction by the ISJC for backlog of cases. With the feeling that they did their duty, the members of the Council went to a vacation with duration of 47 days.
