SJC Postpone the Issue of a Formal Statement

The Supreme Judicial Council postponed the issue of a formal statement in response to the allegations of the Minister of Interior with regard to recent court rulings on high profile cases.

The dispute concentrated on whether the statement should be general or specific. While trying to omit the Minister’s name from the statement, the SJC members did not reach an agreement on the text thereof. Therefore, the vote was cancelled for Thursday.

In the meantime, all of the members stated in their pre-election concepts that they would defend the independence of the judiciary and of any magistrate from unreasonable and unsupported criticism. In an interview for the National radio, the Minister stated that the European Commission should investigate the acquittal on the SAPARD case and the election of the judge as a SJC member. The Council’s position has been awaited since.
